5 Eco-Fab Skin Care Hacks

May is skin cancer awareness month, and skincare is so much work!

I used to be horrible at skincare, we all were. Then after I got good at it, I had to figure out how to make it eco-friendly yet still fab. With being a pale skinned, freckled beauty and growing up in sunny states like Arizona and Texas, I had to learn the basics at a young age.

However, I also grew up in the tanning bed age. I spent my teenage years in the midwest where the summer was basically a competition of who could get the most tan. Then came college where my poor skin saw the UV lights of a tanning bed almost every single day. Then came enlightened adulthood where they tell me that sacrificing being a bronzed beauty now will help my aging process later.

Moral of the story: your skin is your largest organ, it is the one that protects you the most, is exposed to the most bad stuff, and the one you should consciously take care of every single day.

That being said, I learned to live by these skin care commandments:

  1. Take off your makeup
  2. Sunscreen!!
  3. Water, water, water
  4. Pure products (see below)
  5. You are what you eat, skin condition is directly correlated with how you eat (high fat, high sugar vs. high fiber, rich in nutrients)

Coconut Oil

  • Heavy in protein, vitamin E, and saturated fats
  • Solid at room temperature

I DO NOT put this on my face as a moisturizer, it tends to clog my pores. However, I DO use it all over my body. After I get out of the shower, I pat my skin dry and put a thin layer of coconut oil all over. I very carefully don’t touch anything for 5-10 minutes and then wipe off the excess oil with a towel. I also use this as eye makeup remover and it works great!

Jojoba Oil

  • Chemically similar to skin
  • Least likely to clog pores

I use jojoba oil on my face almost every night, only 1 or 2 drops. I wouldn’t say I’ve seen a dramatic difference but I also don’t have a bad reaction to it.

Marula Oil

  • High in Omega fatty acids
  • Absorbs quickly

Similar to jojoba oil, this oil is chemically similar to skin so it is very less likely to clog your pores. I just started using this recently, and so far I’m loving it!

Tea Tree Oil

  • Fights infection
  • Use for acne and insect bites

I use tea tree oil (probably too much), when I have breakouts. I swear it works overnight, but when you over-use it, it can also harm the skin. Use sparingly.

Olive Oil

  • High in antioxidants, vitamin A, and vitamin E
  • Great for dry skin

My FAVORITE skin exfoliator ever is mixing a few spoonfuls of coffee grounds with a couple tablespoons of olive oil to make a scrub. Your skin is super soft and hydrated afterwards and the caffeine in the coffee is even rumored to fight cellulite.
